Recently, Bury’s Labour Council Leader Eamonn O’Brien claimed that only Labour is “ambitious enough to get on with the job,” suggesting that “other political parties in Bury are fighting against plans to improve our town” which we in Bury Independents assume is a thinly-veiled attack on articles we have recently published on our website and Facebook page. While we appreciate the leader taking time out of his busy schedule to read our material, we’d point out to him that ambition isn’t measured by slogans—it’s judged by meaningful outcomes for the people of Bury.
At Bury Independents, we’re not interested in political theatre. Our ambition is rooted in tangible action and prioritising what really matters to local residents. Here’s how we’re already making a difference:
Standing Up for Practical Change
- Challenging hollow posturing over highways
Labour’s “Take Back Control” lane rental motion might look like action—but it’s simply piggybacking on a Greater Manchester-wide initiative led by TfGM, and something Labour could’ve enacted years ago had they chosen to act. We’re committed to meaningful infrastructure improvements—not headlines. - Exposing the Clean Air Zone missteps
The rollout of CAZ cameras and their subsequent removal across Greater Manchester—including Bury—has proven problematic. We’re shining a light on these blunders and calling for solutions that work for residents, not against them. - Fighting for fair pricing during difficult times
We advocated for and were successful in realising a reduction in weekend burial costs across our town—a change that respects the traditions and financial pressures faced by Muslim families, turning compassion into policy. - Restoring community voices in local governance
Labour axed the Township Forums, dismantling a valuable space for town-level discussion and accountability. We’re calling for these forums to return, so residents have a direct say in decisions that affect their neighbourhoods – Bury Labour have resisted this.
Ambition That Works — For Bury
Here’s what real, community-first ambition looks like:
- Transparent local leadership
We reject empty slogans like “Take Back Control.” Instead, we want open dialogue, tangible delivery, and genuine respect for residents’ voices. - Protecting essentials—not just green belt, but service quality
Whether it’s preserving shared public spaces or ensuring fair pricing for essential services, we focus on what matters to families and communities every day. - Putting people first in planning and service delivery
That means reviving Township Forums, fixing infrastructure with practical solutions, and delivering compassionate, responsible governance.
Ambition isn’t about claiming you’re the only ones standing up. It’s about the quiet, steady work that makes a real difference—road by road, conversation by conversation, family by family.
If you believe in local leadership that delivers real outcomes, not just slogans, please share this post. Let’s keep the conversation focused on what works—for Bury, by Bury.
